Greetings everyone,

Most of you are probably already aware that I have had a concept in my head that I wanted to share with all of you for some time now. However, shifting focus and an injury here and there has pushed this back until today.

The objective was to create a sort of "rite of passage workout" to be shared with all of you who are currently training at an extremely high level. I wanted to create something that was extremely difficult, but attainable. A sort of test for which one can study. A combination of tasks, that if one could complete under an hour, one can pretty much do anything. A workout that would expose any weak links in the chain. A workout that would require some additional, specific preparation for pretty much anyone willing to accept the challenge.

The list is short. We have about 400 members in The Firm, and there are barely 20 names on the list, and several are in different parts of the country. So first and foremost, congratulations, and I am honored that you high achievers have entrusted me with your fitness goals. All of you have demonstrated that you are more than capable of completing this task.

I wanted this to be 300esque as a tribute to Mr. Twight and Gym Jones. I do believe that Mark Twight is the foremost authority on the face of the earth regarding such things. And his vision has shaped and elevated my training, and thus your training in a way I never thought possible.

I also needed a name. Initially I thought crossfit's naming of their workouts after women was a bit silly. However, I must admit it has grown on me. So we will give this a woman's name. Gorgo was the wife of the Spartan King Leonidas. She was a unique historical figure in that she was the daughter of a king, married a king and gave birth to a king. And was known for her strength and wisdom. Gorgo is perfect, we have a name.

Gorgo addresses every aspect of what we do in training. Equal parts push / pull. Equal parts strength / conditioning. Equal parts of movements that require technical mastery to maximize success and those that do not. The overall volume is significant enough that the skill of energy management is essential as well. Mental toughness and focus are key. In addition, there is no gray area here. You either do this or you do not. Nothing is subjective. We know not all pull-ups are created equal, but there is a standard here that is clearly defined.

So here is my girl with my results from this morning. The splits are the exact time for each element with total time at the bottom.

Deadlift 135 lbs. x 100                                    5:01
Chest hits the floor push-ups x 100                7:12
Box Jumps on the 24" Box x 100                    9:08
Squat Press w/ 95 lbs. on the ball x 100       14:49
15' Rope Climbs, Arms Only x 10                    5:34
1,500 Meter Row                                             5:56

                                                     Total Time: 56:31

My expectation was that Gorgo would take me 35 to 40 minutes to do today. Obviously I was mistaken. And a great deal of learning took place for me as well. I have always pulled better than I pushed, and despite my efforts to attain more balance, I am not there yet.

A few brief thoughts on each element:

Deadlift: The deadlift is king. The single most functional exercise we have and part of our DNA. I broke up the 100 with sets of 30, 40 and 30. This was not terribly difficult, but certainly impacted the remainder of the day.

Push-ups: The Gym Jones standard chest hits the floor changes this movement significantly. Opted to break these up quite a bit and may have been a strategic error, felt as if this was way too long.

Box jumps: Never walked away from the box, steady, no rapid fire jumps. Feel good about this effort but took longer than it felt.

Squat press: Knew this would be rough and it was. Started with sets of 8, and was reduced to 5's very quickly. I need work here.

Rope climbs: Major X factor here. I was not sure how well I would climb at this stage of the day. And we know this is one place where the day could just end. The rope was the easiest part of the day, and I did not expect that to be the case.

1,500 meter row: Did not push the limits here, averaged 1:58 per 500 meters and feel good about it. Not a great deal of time to be made or lost on this one.

When this was all said and done the question I asked several whom are in the know was, "Is this too hard?" And the consensus is no, there was brief talk about making her easier, but no. We don't lower the bar, we find a way to get over. I will do this again shortly, and it will be faster and all of you can do this. A list of finishers will be posted in the gym, and finishers t-shirts will be awarded.

I consider myself very fortunate that all of you very gifted people call me your personal trainer. When you are ready for Gorgo let me know.

Good luck,

Paul
